SSR codes for flights: wheelchair, meals, UMNR and more

An SSR (special service request) is a four-letter code in a flight booking that asks the airline for a service, such as a wheelchair, a special meal or a seat for a cello, or gives it data it needs, such as passport details. The code is the same in every booking system; the entry that adds it is not.

WCHR, WCHS or WCHC?

The three wheelchair codes say how far the passenger can walk. A passenger who brings their own wheelchair gets a second code for it: WCMP (manual), WCBD (dry-cell battery), WCBW (wet-cell battery) or WCLB (lithium-ion battery).

Code Climbs the steps Walks to the seat What the airport does
WCHRYesYesWheelchair for the long walk to and from the aircraft.
WCHSNoYesWheelchair to the aircraft, then a lift or an ambulift instead of the steps.
WCHCNoNoCarried to the seat in an aisle chair.

The airline's answer

After the booking is saved, the airline answers each SSR with a status code. Only a confirmed request is booked. An OSI is different: it only tells the airline something and gets no answer, so a wheelchair written in an OSI is not booked.

HK · KK
Confirmed by the airline.
NN · HN
Requested, no answer yet.
UN · NO · UC
Refused: the airline will not provide it. Find another way or another flight.

Where the codes come from

Most codes and every entry come from our own Amadeus guide and Galileo guide. The codes they do not cover were checked on 14 October 2026 against these public sources; the meanings are in our own words.
